Political will of member states key to successful promotion of human rights

Human Rights Day marks the anniversary of the adoption by the General Assembly of the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  This year’s observance also marks 20 years since a bold step forward in the struggle to make rights a reality for all:  the adoption by the World Conference on Human Rights of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action.  Drawing on the participation of more than 800 non-governmental organizations, national institutions, treaty bodies and academics, Member States adopted a far-reaching vision and created the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), thereby realizing one of the international community’s long-held dreams.

He died Thursday night at age 95.

Improve Power Supply and Efficiency Before Charging Higher Tariffs – Dr. Jeffrey

Kota Kinabalu: “The federal and Sabah governments along with their Ministers are failing the people in Sabah and turning a blind eye to unwarranted increases in the electricity tariffs in Sabah without solving the real problems.  It’s a gross misconduct and misgovernance on their part creating a “lose-lose-lose” scenario for Sabahans” said Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan, STAR Sabah Chief in response to the 16.9% increase in tariffs for Sabah and Labuan compared to 15% increase in the Peninsula commencing next year.

The governments and Ministers need to understand that as the ruling regime, they are first and foremost, holding trusteeship as well as fiduciary and social responsibilities to the people.

Implement Borneonisation, Safeguard Autonomy of High Court – Dr. Jeffrey

Kota Kinablau: “The Sabah government must ensure that the Registrar of the High Court here is headed by a Borneo native and not replaced by another Malayan and put to rest the rumours circulating over his replacement” said Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan, STAR Sabah Chief commenting on the promotion of the current Registrar as a Judicial Commissioner leaving the vacancy to be filled.
